At Flux Piercing Studio, we take pride in doing things right – not just artistically, but medically. Whether you’re coming to us for your first piercing or your fiftieth, your safety is non-negotiable. That’s why we only use jewellery made from implant-grade titanium and solid 14k or 18k gold – and we work exclusively with world-class manufacturers who share our high standards.
This isn’t just about preference – it’s about science, safety, ethics, and respect for your body. Choosing your jewellery is a part of adding to your journey, your presentation tells your story – who wouldn’t want the best of the best.
🧬 The Science of Safe Jewellery: Why Material Matters
Your skin is your largest organ, and a new piercing is an open wound – which means it’s especially vulnerable to irritation, allergic reactions, or infection during the healing process. The material that sits in that wound, often for weeks or months, must meet very strict standards to be considered body-safe.
Unfortunately, not all body jewellery is created equal – and most jewellery sold online or in fashion stores is not safe for initial piercings, and in some cases not safe for healed ones either.
Let’s break it down:
❌ What We Don’t Use – and Why
🚫 Mystery Metals & Plated Jewellery
- Often marketed as “surgical steel,” “fashion jewellery,” or simply “metal”
- Frequently contains nickel, a major allergen – up to 17% of women and 3% of men are nickel-sensitive
- Can tarnish, corrode, or flake, exposing the wound to irritants and bacteria
- May lack any regulatory testing or certification – a big red flag
🚫 Gold-Plated, Vermeil, Gold-Filled or Rolled Gold Jewellery
- While they may look like gold, these are thin layers of gold over cheaper base metals
- These layers can wear off over time, especially in moist environments like a healing piercing
- Once the base metal is exposed, the jewellery can cause discoloration, irritation, and infection
🚫 Discoloration and Permanent Damage
Some metals can cause the skin to react, turning black, green, or grey – much like how wearing a silver necklace can sometimes leave a dark mark on your neck. This happens when certain metals oxidize or react with your skin’s natural oils, sweat, or even skincare products.
Now imagine that happening inside your piercing channel.
If low-quality metal causes discoloration inside the tissue, it’s not just cosmetic – it can become permanently embedded in the skin, and even a dermatologist may not be able to reverse it. This discoloration can remain even if the jewellery is removed, and in some cases, may require medical or surgical intervention to improve.
The Risk Isn’t Worth It.
🚫 Low-Quality Stainless Steel
- Not all stainless steel is suitable for body piercings – only a very specific subset is biocompatible
- Many cheaper types contain high levels of nickel and other irritants
- Prone to rough finishes and poor polish – which can trap bacteria
✅ What We Do Use – and Why
🔩 Implant-Grade Titanium (ASTM F-136 or F-1295)
The safest metal available for initial piercings
• Used in surgical implants for its extreme biocompatibility
• Contains low to no nickel, making it perfect for sensitive skin
• Extremely durable and corrosion-resistant
• Can be anodized for beautiful colour without affecting safety (keep your eyes peeled for an upcoming newsletter about what anodisation is. Did you know we can do this in the studio, please ask.)
• Requires mirror-finish polishing, which means smoother surfaces = faster healing
🌈 Niobium
A hypoallergenic, nickel-free metal ideal for sensitive skin
• Naturally biocompatible and safe for fresh piercings
• Can be anodized in a wide range of vibrant colours
• Slightly heavier than titanium, giving it a luxe feel without compromising safety
• Requires no alloying, making it a pure and consistent option
• Polishes to a smooth finish for comfort and optimal healing
💛 Solid 14k or 18k Gold (Nickel-Free)
We only stock nickel-free solid gold – no plating, no fillers
• Higher karat gold (14k-18k) is safe for healed piercings and, when properly alloyed, for initial ones
• Gold is naturally non-corrosive and has excellent skin compatibility when properly alloyed and polished
• Looks stunning and lasts a lifetime with proper care
• All of our gold jewellery is hand-finished and polished to a mirror shine, ensuring safety and elegance
💎 Who We Trust: Our Verified Jewellery Partners
We only purchase jewellery from reputable manufacturers who meet or exceed industry safety standards – including internal threading or threadless designs, precise tolerances, hand-polishing, and ethically sourced materials. This is to ensure that jewellery must be the right length, diameter, and gauge for your unique anatomy and piercing placement. Too tight, and it can restrict circulation and trap fluids; too loose, and it can catch or cause trauma. Ill-fitting jewellery increases the risk of swelling, embedding, or rejection. The style also matters – certain shapes (like rings, bars, or labrets) are best suited to specific piercings to ensure comfort and proper healing.
