Today we’re addressing something we see regularly in the studio: piercings and scar tissue.

Maybe you had a piercing years ago that closed.
Maybe one rejected or migrated.
Maybe you experienced complications that left visible scarring.

And now you’re wondering:

“Can I get pierced again in the same spot?”

The short answer? Sometimes.
The longer answer deserves proper explanation — and that’s exactly what this is.

🧬 What Is Scar Tissue — And Why Does It Matter?

Scar tissue forms when your body repairs itself after trauma — including piercings.

Unlike normal skin, scar tissue is:

  • Thicker
  • Less elastic
  • Lower in blood supply
  • Structurally different

That means it doesn’t behave like untouched skin — and that directly affects how a new piercing will heal.

When we talk about scar tissue in piercing, we’re usually referring to:

  • A small, closed-over healed piercing
  • Hypertrophic scarring (raised but contained)
  • Keloid scarring (raised and extending beyond the original site — rare, but genetic)
  • Tissue left behind after rejection or migration

Each presents very different levels of risk.

🔍 Can You Be Pierced Through Scar Tissue?

It depends. We assess two main factors.

1️⃣ How much scar tissue is present?

Minimal scarring — such as a tiny, flat, closed-over hole — is often no issue at all.

However, thicker or fibrous scar tissue behaves differently. It can:

  • Be harder to pierce cleanly
  • Heal more slowly
  • React more aggressively
  • Struggle to stabilise jewellery

Scar tissue simply isn’t as forgiving as healthy skin.

In some cases, we can adjust placement slightly. In others, we may advise against piercing the area again.

2️⃣ What caused the scar tissue?

This matters more than most people realise.

If the previous piercing:

  • Healed well
  • Was removed intentionally
  • Closed naturally over time

Then re-piercing is often viable.

However, if the scar came from:

  • Rejection
  • Migration
  • Severe irritation
  • Repeated trauma
  • Poor jewellery quality
  • Chronic pressure (sleeping, snagging, tension)

Then we proceed cautiously.

The body has already demonstrated difficulty tolerating jewellery in that location.

⚠️ Rejection: Why It Changes the Conversation

Rejection means your body actively pushed the jewellery out.

If that happened once, the risk of it happening again increases — especially if:

  • Your anatomy hasn’t changed
  • The same pressure remains
  • The scar tissue is still prominent

We won’t automatically say no.
But we may strongly recommend a different placement.

We would rather protect your body than repeat a negative outcome.

⏳ What Healing Looks Like the Second Time

If we determine re-piercing is safe, understand this:

Healing through scar tissue is not the same as a first-time piercing.

Scar tissue:

  • Has reduced blood flow
  • Reacts more easily
  • Can swell unpredictably
  • May not stabilise jewellery as efficiently

As a result, we often:

  • Extend healing timelines
  • Recommend more frequent check-ins
  • Adjust aftercare guidance
  • Monitor placement carefully

Patience becomes essential.

🛑 When We May Decline

We assess every client individually. However, we may decline to re-pierce if:

  • Scar tissue is thick or unstable
  • There is a personal or family history of keloids
  • The previous rejection was severe
  • Inflammation is ongoing
  • Anatomy does not allow safe placement
  • There is no viable alternative positioning

It’s never about refusing you.
It’s about protecting long-term results.

💬 Considering Re-Piercing? Book a Consultation.

If you’ve had a difficult piercing in the past, book a consultation first.

During your visit, we will:

  • Assess the scar tissue in person
  • Review your piercing history
  • Discuss alternative placements if needed
  • Give honest feedback about success rates
  • Create a plan that prioritises healing

No pressure. Just clarity.

🔄 Recap: Piercing & Scar Tissue

✔️ Minimal flat scarring? Often fine to re-pierce.
❗ Previous rejection? Higher risk.
⚠️ Thick or unstable tissue? We may advise against it.
📲 Best next step? Consultation first.

Every body tells a story. We’re here to make sure the next chapter heals properly.
