Everything You Need to Know About Healing Your New Piercing Safely
At Flux Piercing Studio, we care deeply about more than just giving you a beautiful new piercing. We are committed to helping you heal it properly, safely, and with the best possible outcome for your body and your lifestyle.
Healing is a journey, not a quick fix. It requires patience, care, and a good understanding of what is actually going on beneath the surface of your skin. In this newsletter, we are sharing everything you need to know about aftercare, expected healing times, and how to recognise if something is not quite right.
Every Body is Different – And Every Piercing Heals Differently
One of the most important things to remember is that healing is not the same for everyone. Your friend’s piercing may have healed in a few months, while yours could take a bit longer – and that is absolutely normal.
Healing is affected by things like:
- Your immune system
- How well you sleep
- Stress levels
- Your overall health and nutrition
- Your unique skin type and anatomy
- Whether you accidentally sleep on it or irritate it during the day
There is no exact timeline that applies to everyone as each body is different and every piercing can have unexpected flare ups, but there are average healing times that give a helpful starting point. Keep reading for a breakdown by piercing type.
Estimated Healing Times by Piercing
These timeframes are general guidelines. Your piercing may take more or less time depending on your body and how well you follow your aftercare.
Ear Piercings
- Lobes: 3 to 6 months
- Helix, Forward Helix, Tragus, Daith, Conch, Flat: 6 to 12 months
- Industrial / Scaffold: 9 to 12 months or longer (very anatomy dependant)
Facial Piercings
- Eyebrow: 3 to 6 months
- Nostril: 6 to 9 months
- Septum: 6 to 8 weeks (faster than most piercings due to being soft tissue)
Oral Piercings
- Tongue: 4 to 6 weeks
- Lip / Labret / Philtrum: 3 to 6 months
Body Piercings
- Navel (Belly Button): 9 to 12 months or longer
- Nipple: 9 to 12 months or more
- Surface and Dermal Piercings: Vary greatly depending on location and anatomy
Healing is not just about the skin looking calm on the outside. The piercing must be fully healed internally before jewellery can be changed or removed. Always check with your piercer before switching jewellery, even if it looks healed.
Cleaning Your Piercing – Keep It Simple
The best way to care for your fresh piercing is to keep it clean, not complicated.
We recommend using a sterile saline solution twice a day for up to the first 4 weeks. Our top choice for this is NeilMed Piercing Aftercare Spray, which is widely used in the industry and trusted by professionals.
How to Clean Your Piercing:
- Wash your hands first, always
- Spray NeilMed saline directly to the piercing site or into the lid of the bottle and dip a high quality cotton bud and hold it gently either side of the piercing, front and back.
- Dab it dry afterwards with your cotton bud
- Do not twist, turn, or move the jewellery
- Do not use cotton wool or tissues (they can leave fibres behind)
- Avoid alcohol, peroxide, TCP, tea tree oil, or any other harsh products
This gentle approach allows your body to heal naturally without interference. Over-cleaning, or using harsh chemicals, can cause irritation, dryness, and prolong the healing process.
If you have a facial piercing, another thing to consider is the use of makeup and face creams. Whilst the piercing is healing you want to avoid getting any product into that piercing channel to avoid a potential infection risk. If you’re a make-up lover you will have to cleverly blend around the piercing site to ensure it remains unclogged. When removing any make-up, do ensure you are not getting the product in/around the piercing site and dry the area afterwards to ensure no moisture remains.
Things to Avoid During the Healing Process
Some everyday habits can delay healing or cause complications, even if you are keeping the area clean. Here is what we strongly recommend avoiding while your piercing is still healing:
- Touching or playing with your jewellery
- Sleeping on fresh ear piercings (use a travel pillow to offload pressure)
- Submerging your piercing in swimming pools, hot tubs, lakes, or baths
- Changing jewellery too early
- Using creams or oils near the piercing
- Wearing tight or dirty clothing around body piercings (especially navels and nipples)
- Removing the jewellery “just to clean it” (this can irritate and delay healing)
- Leaving any moisture around the area (after showers, baths, hair washes, make up removal, facial cleanses etc)
Healing a piercing requires leaving it alone as much as possible, while keeping the area gently clean. Think of it as a wound that your body is trying to close around a foreign object – it takes time, and consistency is key.
Common Healing Signs – And When to Check In
During healing, you might notice:
- Slight redness or warmth
- A bit of swelling
- Clear or pale yellow fluid that forms a crust
- Occasional itching
These are all normal signs of healing. However, if you notice any of the following, please get in touch with us as soon as possible:
- Persistent or worsening pain
- Thick green, grey, or smelly discharge
- Jewellery feeling like it is sinking into the skin
- A growing lump or bump that is painful
- Sudden bleeding or heat that does not settle
Even if you are just unsure, we would always rather you ask us than worry. We are happy to offer a check-up or advice – that is part of our duty of care.
You Deserve Support Throughout Your Healing
Healing is not something that ends two weeks after you walk out the door. Some piercings require a full year or more to truly settle. That is why we are always here to answer your questions, help with jewellery changes, or check in on your healing progress.
We want your piercing to be something you are proud of – not something you struggle with. And that starts with proper healing advice from the beginning.
