At Flux Piercing Studio, we believe informed clients make safer choices. We regularly see people wearing butterfly back earrings — particularly in older piercings or piercings done elsewhere — and many don’t realise these small backs can cause significant problems.

Let’s break down what butterfly backs are, why we don’t recommend them, and what safer alternatives look like.

🦋 What Are Butterfly Backs?

Butterfly backs (also called friction backs or push backs) are small metal fastenings shaped like a butterfly. They slide onto a thin post and rely on pressure to stay in place.

You’ll typically find them on fashion jewellery or high street earrings. They’re common — but common doesn’t mean suitable for body piercings.

⚠️ Why Butterfly Backs Cause Problems

1️⃣ They Can Slide Forward and Embed

Butterfly backs hold by friction. Over time, that grip loosens — especially when you sleep on them, bump them, or twist them.

As they move forward, they reduce the space your piercing needs for swelling.

In fresh piercings, this pressure can:

  • Cause pain and increased swelling
  • Restrict airflow
  • Lead to embedding (where jewellery sinks into the tissue)
  • Result in scarring or prolonged healing

Embedded jewellery often requires professional removal. It is preventable — but not with friction backs.

2️⃣ They Trap Bacteria and Build-Up

Butterfly backs have folds, seams, and tight crevices. Those gaps collect:

  • Dried lymph fluid
  • Dead skin
  • Hair products
  • Makeup
  • Everyday dirt

They are extremely difficult to clean properly.

In a healing piercing, trapped debris increases irritation and infection risk. Even in healed piercings, build-up can cause odour, soreness, and inflammation.

Professional jewellery uses smooth, simple designs for a reason: fewer places for bacteria to hide.

3️⃣ They’re Often Made from Low-Quality Metals

Many butterfly back earrings are made from base metals such as:

  • Nickel
  • Brass
  • Mixed alloys

Nickel is one of the most common metal allergens globally. Repeated exposure can trigger redness, itching, swelling — and over time, a permanent sensitivity.

Low-grade metals also tarnish and corrode. When that happens, microscopic particles can leach into the skin and cause irritation.

Fresh piercings are open wounds. They deserve implant-grade materials — not costume jewellery.

4️⃣ They’re Commonly Linked to Piercing Guns

Butterfly backs are frequently paired with piercing guns.

Piercing guns force blunt jewellery through tissue. This causes:

  • Excess trauma
  • Increased swelling
  • Greater tissue damage

Unlike sterile, single-use needles, piercing guns cannot be fully sterilised. That increases cross-contamination risk.

At Flux, we use single-use sterile needles and implant-grade jewellery — always.

💎 What Professional Piercing Jewellery Looks Like

Professional jewellery differs in both design and material.

At Flux, we use:

  • Implant-grade titanium (ASTM F136)
  • Solid 14k+ nickel-free gold
  • Threaded or threadless secure ends
  • Smooth, polished surfaces
  • Proper post lengths fitted for swelling

This ensures:

  • Space for healing
  • Reduced embedding risk
  • Easier cleaning
  • Long-term comfort

Good jewellery supports healing. It doesn’t fight against it.

🌿 Healing, Comfort & Long-Term Health

Healing requires space, airflow, and stable jewellery.

Butterfly backs compress tissue, trap moisture, and limit circulation. Over time, that constant pressure creates unnecessary stress on the piercing channel.

Even long-healed piercings benefit from upgrading.

Many clients are surprised how much more comfortable their ears feel once they switch from friction backs to flat-back labret-style jewellery.

✨ Thinking of Upgrading?

If you currently wear butterfly backs — or aren’t sure what metal you’re wearing — we’re happy to assess it.

We offer:

  • Jewellery material checks
  • Professional jewellery change appointments
  • Implant-grade titanium and solid gold options
  • Safe fitting and sizing

Upgrading doesn’t just improve appearance. It protects your piercings long term.

❤️ In Summary

Butterfly backs may be common, but they are not ideal for body piercings.

They can:

  • Slide forward and embed
  • Trap bacteria and debris
  • Contain low-quality, irritating metals
  • Be linked to piercing gun trauma

Choosing professional jewellery means choosing:

  • Safer healing
  • Better materials
  • Long-term comfort
  • Reduced complications
