At Flux Piercing Studio, we commit to safe, precise, and professional piercing using only high-quality, implant-grade materials.

Piercing isnโ€™t just aesthetic โ€” itโ€™s biological. The metals that sit inside your body matter.

One topic that occasionally arises is Argyria (sometimes called Argyrosis). This condition links directly to prolonged silver exposure and can cause permanent skin discolouration.

Hereโ€™s what you need to know.

What Is Argyria?

Argyria is a permanent skin discolouration caused by the accumulation of silver particles within body tissues.

Over time, microscopic silver deposits settle into the skin. These particles react with light and tissue, creating a bluish-grey or slate tone that does not fade.

Because the silver embeds into the dermal layers, the body cannot naturally remove it.

While many people associate Argyria with industrial or medical exposure, it can also develop locally from jewellery worn in piercings โ€” particularly when silver remains in constant contact with the skin for prolonged periods.

How Argyria Develops

Argyria begins when tiny silver particles enter the upper layers of the skin. This happens gradually and often unnoticed.

Importantly:

  • Both low-quality and high-quality silver can cause it
  • Sterling silver is not exempt
  • Purity does not prevent absorption

Even fine sterling silver can release trace particles over time, especially in warm, moist environments such as healed piercings.

Once the pigment forms, it is permanent. Laser treatments may reduce visibility in some cases, but full reversal is rare.

Prevention is therefore critical.

Why Flux Does Not Use Silver โ€” Ever

Silver may look traditional or attractive, but it is not suitable for body piercing.

For that reason, Flux Piercing Studio does not stock or use silver jewellery at all.

Silver presents several risks in piercings:

  • It tarnishes easily when exposed to moisture and air
  • Tarnish creates surface instability where bacteria can collect
  • Oxidation releases silver ions into the skin
  • It reacts with skincare, aftercare products, and natural body chemistry
  • It breaks down structurally over time

Even in fully healed piercings, these reactions can occur slowly and silently.

Silver is best reserved for short-term decorative wear โ€” not for long-term internal placement.

Recognising Early Signs of Argyria

Localised Argyria typically appears as:

  • A faint blue-grey halo
  • Patchy pigmentation around a piercing site
  • Gradual darkening that does not wash off

Because the pigment forms beneath the skin surface, removing the jewellery does not reverse it.

If you notice unusual discolouration, seek professional advice. A reputable piercer can assess the jewellery material, and a dermatologist can confirm diagnosis.

Safe Alternatives to Silver

At Flux, we use only implant-grade, biocompatible metals, including:

  • Titanium (ASTM F136)
  • Niobium
  • Solid 14k+ nickel-free gold

These materials:

  • Do not corrode
  • Do not oxidise
  • Do not leach metal into tissue
  • Are used in medical implants
  • Have excellent long-term safety records

They also provide aesthetic versatility โ€” from polished silver tones to warm gold finishes โ€” without compromising safety.

Every piece we offer meets or exceeds recognised safety standards.

Protecting Your Piercings Long Term

The most effective way to prevent Argyria is simple:

Do not wear silver in body piercings.

If you currently wear silver jewellery and notice pigmentation, remove it and switch to a safe implant-grade alternative.

We also recommend periodic jewellery checks, particularly for clients who wear pieces continuously. Over time, even safe metals benefit from inspection.

Our team is always happy to assess your jewellery and ensure it remains suitable for long-term wear.

In Summary

Argyria is a permanent condition caused by silver exposure.

It can develop gradually.
It can occur even with high-quality silver.
It cannot be reversed once established.

For that reason, Flux Piercing Studio avoids silver entirely.

We choose implant-grade materials because your body deserves long-term safety โ€” not short-term shine.

If youโ€™d like to upgrade existing jewellery or discuss safe metal options, weโ€™re here to guide you.

Your body.

Your safety.
