For many people, piercings are a powerful form of self-expression โ€” a way to feel more you. However, if you live with eczema (atopic dermatitis), getting pierced requires a little extra thought.

The good news? With the right approach, people with eczema can absolutely heal piercings successfully.

At Flux, we prioritise both your piercing and your skin health. Hereโ€™s what you need to know about piercings and eczema, how the two interact, and how to adjust your aftercare safely.

๐ŸŒฟ Understanding Eczema and Skin Sensitivity

Eczema weakens the skin barrier. As a result, the skin loses moisture more easily and reacts more strongly to irritants โ€” including metals, products, friction, and even saline.

When you receive a piercing, we intentionally create a controlled wound. Your body immediately begins repairing that tissue. If you have eczema, your skin may:

  • Heal more slowly
  • React more easily
  • Feel drier or tighter
  • Become inflamed more quickly

That doesnโ€™t make piercings unsafe. It simply means planning matters more.

๐Ÿ“ Choosing the Right Area to Pierce

Placement is everything.

If you frequently experience eczema flare-ups in a specific area โ€” behind the ears, on the neck, around the jawline โ€” we strongly advise avoiding piercing through or near active patches.

Piercing through inflamed eczema-prone skin can lead to:

  • Delayed healing
  • Excess crusting or weeping
  • Increased infection risk
  • Heightened itching and discomfort

Healthy, calm skin heals best.

If youโ€™re unsure whether an area is suitable, book a quick consultation first. Weโ€™ll assess the skin in person and give you honest guidance.

๐Ÿ’ง Saline Aftercare & Dryness

Sterile saline (like NeilMed) remains the gold standard for safe piercing aftercare. However, saline is still saltwater โ€” and salt draws moisture out of the skin.

If youโ€™re prone to dryness, overusing saline can trigger flare-ups.

To reduce irritation:

  • Use saline once or twice daily โ€” not more
  • Aim the spray directly at the piercing channel
  • Pat dry gently with clean gauze or paper towel
  • Avoid letting moisture sit on surrounding skin

If nearby skin feels tight or itchy, moisturise the surrounding area carefully โ€” but never the piercing itself.

Small adjustments prevent big problems.

๐ŸŒผ Moisturising Around a New Piercing

Managing eczema often means regular moisturising. Thatโ€™s fine โ€” with boundaries.

Do not apply creams, oils, or ointments directly onto a fresh piercing. Occlusive products trap moisture and bacteria, which can delay healing.

Instead:

  • Leave a 5โ€“10mm dry zone around the piercing
  • Apply eczema treatments only to surrounding skin
  • Use clean hands or cotton buds
  • Avoid fragranced or active ingredients (urea, AHA, BHA) during healing

If you use prescription steroid creams, follow medical guidance โ€” especially if the flare is close to the piercing site.

When in doubt, ask. Coordination between piercer and dermatologist is always welcome.

๐Ÿ”ฉ Jewellery Choice Matters Even More

Eczema-prone skin often reacts strongly to nickel. Even trace amounts can trigger redness, itching, or rash-like irritation.

At Flux, we pierce with:

  • Implant-grade titanium (ASTM F136)
  • Niobium
  • Solid 14k+ nickel-free gold

These materials are biocompatible, stable, and safe for sensitive skin.

If youโ€™ve reacted to jewellery before, tell us before we begin. Weโ€™ll adjust accordingly.

๐Ÿฉน When to Wait

Sometimes the best decision is patience.

If your eczema is:

  • Actively flaring
  • Cracked or bleeding
  • Weeping
  • Inflamed in your chosen area

We recommend waiting.

Piercing through compromised skin increases stress on the body and lowers healing success.

Clear, intact skin always gives better long-term results.

๐Ÿ’ฌ What If You Flare After Piercing?

If eczema develops near your healing piercing:

  1. Donโ€™t panic.
  2. Donโ€™t over-clean.
  3. Donโ€™t remove the jewellery.

Instead:

  • Take clear photos
  • Identify possible triggers (dryness, friction, product irritation)
  • Contact us for assessment
  • Loop in your dermatologist if needed

Many eczema-related irritations resolve with minor adjustments.
